The short answer
Credit Karma is an advertising business. The free credit score is real and useful, and it exists to put you in front of credit card and loan offers that pay per referral. That's not a secret — it's the published model.
PaySmart sells software. $9.99 a year, no offers, no recommendations, nothing to click.
The practical difference: Credit Karma's insights are shaped by what's profitable to recommend. PaySmart has nothing to recommend, so it just shows you your numbers.

Why people use PaySmart alongside — or instead of — Credit Karma
- They want to see utilization per card and plan payments, which a score dashboard doesn't do.
- They got tired of every insight ending in a card recommendation.
- They'd rather their balances not sit in a database built for ad targeting.
What Credit Karma does that PaySmart doesn't
It gives you a free credit score and report monitoring. PaySmart does not pull your credit and has no plans to — it's a tracker, not a bureau product.
Plenty of people use both: Credit Karma to watch the score, PaySmart to manage the cards driving it. That's a perfectly sensible setup and we're not going to pretend otherwise.
